EDE 612 Literacy Assessment : Understanding Struggling Readers and Writers for Teachers

3 lecture hours; 1 conference hour; 4 credits. The course is designed to introduce elementary school teachers to a variety of literacy assessment tools that diagnose struggling readers and writers. Exposed to an array of both formal and informal assessment tools, teachers will develop an in-depth understanding of the nature of literacy assessment tools, their applications, constraints, and the importance of systematically assessing the strengths and weaknesses of struggling readers and writers. Teachers will have opportunities to assess learners and develop intervention plans for students they assess. Prerequisite: Matriculation in Sequence I of the Graduate Elementary Education Program or EDE 602 or equivalent.
