A math placement test is recommended for all students who have demonstrated CUNY proficiency. The placement test is offered at scheduled times in the College Testing Office.

General Education Requirements

This program has a waiver to specify particular courses students must take in the areas of the General Education Requirements (Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning, Life and Physical Sciences, Scientific World and College Option). If students take different courses in these areas, they will be certified as having completed the requirements, but it may not be possible for them to finish their degree program within the regular number of credits.

One-year of high school chemistry is required prior to entry into CHM 141/121.  If you have not completed one-year of high school chemistry you will be required to complete CHM 100 and CHM 101 prior to registering for CHM 141/121.
  1. A student must complete a minimum of 16 credits in residence at the College of Staten Island in course designated as pre-clinical to receive the Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology.  These credits must include CHM 250 an CHM 256.
  2. BIO 170/BIO 171, CHM 141/CHM 121 and CHM 142/CHM 127 are co-requisites that must be enrolled simultaneously. 
  3. Students who are exempt from MTH 123 will be waived from this requirement.

Student Admitted prior to May 2015

Students admitted prior to May 2015 are not required to enroll in BIO 346, MDT 371 and MDT 372.  In consultation with an advisor the students will be required to register for MDT 380 for a total of 10 credits, MDT 375 for 3 credits, MDT 384 for 2 credits, and MDT 480 for a total of 12 credits. Those who wish to follow the most current curriculum requirements, must speak to a Medical Technology coordinator.

Independent Study

Independent Study, with the approval of a Medical Technology coordinator, may be used to satisfy degree requirements. 

ASCP-BOC or NYS MLS Licensure Examination
Graduation is not contingent upon passing an external examination such as ASCP-BOC or the NYS MLS licensure examination.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Requirement

All courses designated MDT (except BIO/MDT 325) and BIO 316 are non-liberal arts and sciences.

Honors

To graduate with Honors in Medical Technology a student must have a 3.5 grade point average in medical technology courses and must complete an eight-credit Independent Study project under the tutelage of a faculty member from one of the physical or biological sciences. The project must be reviewed and approved by the Interdisciplinary Committee for Medical Technology.
