The College of Staten Island offers advanced certificates in Special Education Childhood and Special Education Adolescence Generalist to provide an appropriate set of academic and clinical experiences for teachers preparing to work with special needs children.   

Both certificates consist of a sequence of four courses needed in the four areas (Foundations, Classroom Management, Assessment, and Pedagogy) required by the New York State Education Department, as well as two Practicum Mentorships in which teachers will be given an extensive opportunity to apply the principles of special education they learned in the courses into the school classroom.

Admission Requirements

  1. A teacher or current graduate student who has a valid, initial or professional certificate in Childhood Education, Grades 1 through 6 or Adolescence Education grades 7-12.

  2. Copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts showing a minimum 3.0 GPA in both undergraduate and graduate coursework.

  3. Two letters of recommendation - letters can be professional or academic.

  4. Participation in an interview.

  5. An essay outlining career goals.

A maximum of 6 credits may be transferred if candidates have had equivalent graduate courses and education experiences within the past five years.  The transfer of credits is subject to the approval of the coordinator of the program.

Degree Requirements

The program of study will consist of the following: a) a 3-credit special education foundations course, b) 9-credit core courses, c) two 2-credit practicum mentorships.  Students are expected to complete the program in one year.
